Eighteen Bridges is  a forum for writers to explore ideas and themes they are deeply passionate about. We value the narrative flair, journalistic rigour, and literary excellence of magazines such as The New Yorker, Harpers and Granta, and we hope to weave similar qualities together with a distinctive Canadian sensibility. Eighteen Bridges is a magazine concerned with people, politics, culture and ideas, and its articles are substantial, in-depth, and grounded in the narrative tradition. We publish stories that are primarily, but not exclusively, about Canada or written by Canadians.

For writers

The majority of our stories are generated through editorial commission, but we do welcome proposals. A good proposal will concisely and coherently express: the story’s essential elements; how the writer intends to approach the story; the section of the magazine best suited to the idea; and a brief summary of the writer’s credentials (no CVs please). Please submit proposals in the body of the email to submissions.

EB also publishes essays, fiction and poetry. Unsolicited manuscripts are accepted (in the form of email attachments, please) but as essays, poetry and fiction are also frequently commissioned, EB is unable to commit to response times. Please submit manuscripts here.

We have a small staff, and the response time to all proposals will vary. Phone queries, as well as telephone follow-ups, are not encouraged.

For artists and photographers

Eighteen Bridges welcome expressions of interest from freelance artists and photographers. Please contact the magazine here, stating concisely how you’d like to contribute the magazine, the sections in which your work would fit, and providing links to your work.

Story proposals, fiction and poetry can also be sent by post to:
